I damaged the edge of a Tori Elite by hitting the wooden dowel holding my Tatami, it didnt chip or render the Katana useless, but it rolled about 3/8 of an inch on the edge. Not hard targets, water bottles, and bamboo. These arent "go to battle" Katana, they are designed to do 1 thing, cut Tatami mats. I dont know of a production company that comes close, which is probably why so many places copy their work, but they are never as good. Other than that Hanwei is hands down the best at casting and designing fittings. I wish they took the time to fit the saya better, that is a minor gripe most people will never notice unless they are a Practitioner or Iaido, however there are a few comoanies like Skyjiro and Huawei that do a better job on the saya fit. You will still find the typical shortcomings of a Hanwei Katana, stuff like Axe handle shaped tsuka, possibly saya rattle, which usually wears some of the etching off the blade, but these are typical for Hanwei. Ots all personal prefence, but I love the finish on the Saya, the rattan wrapping, the colors flow together perfectly, its just about the perfect production Katana IMO. I put the Tori in the same category as the Begui Swords Hanwei makes, they are that nice. The Tsuba, Menuki, and Fuchi Kashira are the best you will find in a production Katana. The fittings and design on the Tori is what makes this Katana the best in their lineup. It really doesnt matter what blade geometry you choose, they are all top notch. I have owned a few different Tori models from Hanwei, except the XL Light, and my personal favorite is the Elite. Featuring differential heat treatment and a narrow edge angle, these wide blades will reward good technique with clean cuts and excellent durability. The Tori is available in three folded steel cutting blade profiles and three Iaito blade lengths.ĭesigned strictly for competitive cutting, our XL Katana blades incorporate the geometry, strength, weight and profile needed for successful cuts on substantial targets. The Saya is wrapped at the mouth with black-lacquered rattan and then finished in a textured brown. The high quality brown leather Tsuka-ito is wrapped over black Same. The Tori features a Flying Crane themed Tsuba and Fuchi/Kashira while the Menuki are Kabuto or Japanese helmets. The Tori katana combines truly elegant furniture and a powder-steel folded blade with the functionality of our Performance Series. The scabbard is a "fingerprintless" brown lacquer with genuine buffalo horn accents and a "clam shell" holding portion. The blade is formed with the new geometry of the XL series so cutting is a breeze. The polish is done so as to bring out the best hada (grain pattern) your eyes will ever see. It all starts with a masterfully hand crafted blade which is folded out of ASSAB K120 C Swedish steel. This new Paul Chen sword, The Tori Xl Katana, is without a doubt one of the finest Japanese swords to ever grace our site. One of the most asked is "What is the BEST katana you have?"
